Cat craze in Japan
A growing number of people in Japan are fascinated by the charm of cats and businesses are cashing in on the boom.
Hundreds of feline lovers gathered Sunday in the western city of Onomich to take part in an event. A participant said he loves cats because they're footloose.
Several businesses are taking advantage of the boom.
A bookstore in Tokyo had a tough time surviving. 3 years ago the owner decided to specialize in cats. The owner, Fumio Anekawa, says thanks to the cat boom, sales expanded.
Kansai University Professor Emeritus Katsuhiro Miyamoto estimates the economic impact could be 20 billion dollars annually. About half of that figure comes from the sale of food and health care products.
