Nomura slashes cash bonuses

Nomura slashed the cash bonuses it paid its top executives and directors by 95 per cent in the last financial year after Japan’s largest investment bank suffered a decline in profits and in its share price.
Only six among its 23 directors and executives received a cash bonus in the year to March 2011, compared with 13 out of 20 who received bonuses the previous year, according to a disclosure made to shareholders.

The sharply lower pay-outs reflect the fact that Nomura’s costly push to break into the global investment banking elite has yet to pay off, two and a half years after it acquired most of Lehman Brothers’ European and Asian operations at the height of the financial crisis.
Pre-tax profits slumped 58 per cent last year as the group’s overseas business posted four straight quarters of pre-tax losses.
The six directors who were awarded cash bonuses received a total of just Y38m ($469,000), a fraction of the Y827m that was paid to the 13 who took home bonuses in the year to March 2010.
The group’s top ten executives received Y899m in total pay, including salary, stock options and cash bonuses, 38 per cent less than the Y1.45bn awarded last year.
